Volunteer Roles - Accessible Sailing

Meet and greet/mobility Assistance

Aim

Ensure sailability clients are welcomed on arrival and are well informed as to facilities available on site.

Tasks

Check in clients against booking list

Inform clients of location of toilet facilities, lake and waiting areas and where to get refreshments from.

Issue clients with appropriate buoyancy aids

Ensure buoyancy aids are correctly fitted.

Assist clients moving around the site and down to the pontoon.

Knowledge & skills required

Know the different buoyancy aids available

Disability awareness

Good enthusiastic communicator

Club protocols and risk assessments

Pontoon Assistance

Aim

Ensure sailabilty clients are safe and feel comfortable whilst on the pontoon and whilst

embarking and disembarking dinghies safely

Tasks

Securing and releasing of dinghy mooring lines.

Assist clients moving around the pontoon area.

Assist hoist operators and helm

Assist clients who are mobile to transfer between pontoon and dinghy.

Clear pontoon of wheelchairs whilst not in use.

Bring wheelchairs to pontoon when required

Knowledge & skills required

Secure use of mooring lines

Disability awareness

Good enthusiastic communicator

Club protocols and risk assessments

Hoist Operator

Aim

Ensure sailabilty clients embark and disembark dinghies safely

Tasks

Set up hoist and slings, including safety checks in line with risk assesments.

Transfer clients from wheelchairs to dinghy and vice versa when using hoist.

Assist clients who are mobile to transfer between pontoon and dinghy.

Store away hoist and slings at end of session.

Knowledge & skills required

Trained hoist operator (at least 1 required when hoist is used)

Disability awareness

Good enthusiastic communicator

Sailing Helm

Aim

Accompany clients in Hansa or adapted Wayfairer to ensure they are involved as

much as possible in the sailing. Impart enthusiasm and knowledge, ensuring the client has an

enjoyable time.

Tasks

Pre-session boat checks in-line with club protocols and risk assesement.

Ensure safe embarking/disembarking of clients in conjunction with other pontoon crew.

Ensure client is safe at all times on the water.

Encourage client to take part in sailing as much as they can or wish to do.

Knowledge & skills required

Competent dinghy sailor

Disability awareness

Good enthusiastic communicator

Club protocols and risk assements

(hoist training)

Hospitality

Aim

Provide refreshments for sailability clients and volunteer volunteers

Tasks

Provide drinks in the bar or at the lake side

Making tea and coffee

Serving up any food available

Washing up and cleaning areas used

Taking payments for all refreshments

Knowledge & skills required

Use of club till and card payments system

Familiarity with bar and kitchen operation at clubhouse

Disability awareness

Good enthusiastic communicator
