Disability Awareness Training Course
RYA Sailability's Disability Awareness Training course is designed for both volunteers at sailing clubs and Instructors at commercial centres. It uses the latest teaching methods, based on the social model of disability.
Around 1 in 5 people in Great Britain have a disability, so understanding the barriers that prevent people taking part in our sport is really important. These can be physical barriers, but they can also be psychological barriers. The course uses scenario based teaching to help participants recognise these barriers and how to overcome them. The course also looks at improving communications skills, the Equality Act and its implications for our sport, the social model of disability and now includes a section on mental health. This one day course provides the opportunity for participants to improve their knowledge of a range of disabilities and how to empower people to take part in boating.
