Model Yacht Section - Growing In Popularity

The Model Yacht section has been attracting new members throughout the 2023 season.

From an initial group of four, we have more than doubled in number and also attracted the interest of several more potential members.

We are all novices to the sport and most have chosen to sail the Joysway Dragon Flite 95 class, as shown in the picture above, although there are a couple of International One Metre IOM) enthusiasts as well. The Joysway Dragon Flite 95 is a popular one design class that can be bought as a complete kit, almost ready to sail out of the box, whereas other classes, such as the IOM are built from plans by those who enjoy the model making process.

During the sailing season April to October - we meet regularly on Friday evenings at the lake shore where we run a number of races. These are usually very competitive but friendly affairs that are seldom dominated by any one sailor; the winning place is shared amongst everyone. The skill of sailing model yachts well is difficult to master; we are all learning but are always willing to assist and advise anyone wishing to improve. During the winter, when access to the lake is restricted, we have arranged with the Ouse Amateur Sailing Club (OASC) to join them on the water at Saddlebow on Sunday mornings after dinghy racing has finished. This element of the programme is still in its infancy and has yet to be proven in popularity.

We welcome anyone to the Friday group on the lake shore, to witness or have a go at model yacht sailing; we are all willing to let newcomers try our boats. For more information contact Peter Hutchinson by email: petermhutchinson@gmail.com. or phone 01485 540775
