SBSC Model Yacht Racing (SBMYC)

Radio Controlled Model Yacht sailing is an exciting, social sport accessible to all over the age of 16yrs. It can be a challenging pastime both for sailors when racing, and for model makers constructing their own craft.

From 1st April to 30th September, on Friday Evenings at 5.30 pm, the Model Yacht Section has exclusive use of the lake when we meet to race and socialise. All clubhouse facilities are open to members at these times. We welcome all - be they landlubbers, sailors, model makers or just interested in trying something new. We currently sail the DragonFlite 95 (DF95). This is a one-design boat that is high performance, affordable, available as an easily assembled kit and can come complete with a radio.

The Model Yacht Section enjoyed its first full season of organised racing in 2024. The racing was always highly competitive but friendly, with most helms enjoying a win at some point over the two series.

Numbers have increased pleasingly throughout the year and we now have 14 members, although we have yet to get more than 9 boats on the water at any one time. We have every reason to believe that we will do so in 2025!

We value our close links with the sailing club and are grateful for the many improvements that have been made to the lake foreshore, which have been of great benefit to us.

Membership

Membership is open to SBSC members, aged16 yrs. and over and anyone wishing to join the sailing club. Model Yacht Section members enjoy the benefits of SBSC Social Family Membership, including access to the clubhouse and a full programme of the clubs social activities.

Model Yacht Section Annual Membership for 2026 is £70, which includes Social Family Membership and £10 for your MYA subscription (a requirement for all). All other categories of SBSC members are free to join us and only need to pay the additional £10 annual MYA subscription.

The 2025 Season

The Model Yacht Section enjoyed another full season of organised racing in 2025. The racing was always highly competitive but friendly, with most helms enjoying a win at some point over the Summer and Spring series.

Our membership numbers have remained steady throughout the year; some leaving and new members joining the fleet, so we now have 14 members in total. We always welcome anyone who is interested in finding out about radio controlled sailing and at our Open Day on Sunday 17th May 2026 we will be happy to share our boats for visitors to have a go.

New to Model Yachting

We are keen to make everyone welcome and to provide the best opportunity for all to learn and improve their radio sailing skills.  So we are pleased to announce that along with the novice handicap system, we have recently introduced a mentoring scheme, aimed at those who are new to the sport or are ex-sailors taking up radio sailing. (More detail here)
