Model Yacht Racing

Radio Controlled Model Yacht sailing is an exciting social sport which is accessible and open to all SBSC members over the age of 16yrs. It can be a challenging pastime both for sailors when racing and for model makers constructing their own craft.

On Friday Evenings the Model Yacht Section has exclusive use of the lake from the Club slipway also, we are hoping to have regular access to the northern end of the lake at other times. All clubhouse facilities are open to members at these times. We welcome all - be they landlubbers, sailors, model makers or just interested in trying something new.

Club members own a number of different boats which they are willing for new members to try before committing to a boat of their own.

The 2022 Model Yacht racing season got off to a good start with an increase in the Dragon Flight 95 fleet and a couple of new members. We are grateful to Mark Charnley for making a set of buoys that are easily deployed using the Rigifelx to create courses suited to the craft and weather. The racing so far has been informal as we all get more practiced at handing the boats and gain a better understanding of the radio equipment! We plan to begin a formal racing series after Easter when we hope to compete in handicap races so that all members can enjoy the whole evening. At present, the Dragon Flight 95 (DF 95) is the largest fleet but we have International One Meter (IOM) and RC Laser classes well represented too. We welcome anyone wishing to have a go and giving a little notice can provide them with a boat to use."
